At Clementine Suds we take pride in crafting exquisite luxury skincare products that elevate your skincare routine and also contribute to a sustainable and eco-conscious lifestyle. We’ve noticed that consumers are often baffled by what sustainable skincare means. Below, we aim to shed light on the concept of sustainable skincare and how it’s different to being merely eco-friendly.
Defining Sustainable Skincare: Sustainable skincare is a holistic approach to beauty that encompasses ethical sourcing, environmentally friendly production methods, and conscious packaging choices. At its core, sustainability in skincare strives for harmony between nature and personal care. This philosophy extends beyond the product itself to consider the entire lifecycle – from ingredient cultivation to product disposal.
Understanding the Difference from Eco-Friendly: While the terms "sustainable" and "eco-friendly" are often used interchangeably, they hold distinct meanings. Eco-friendly products focus on minimizing environmental impact, often by utilizing recycled or biodegradable materials. Whilst this is great, sustainable skincare goes a step further by addressing the entire supply chain, aiming for long-term environmental, social, and economic balance.
In short – any sustainable business should be a business that thinks long term. Long term about the planet, its employees, the communities where its ingredients are sourced, and communities that are impacted by its waste.
Key Elements of Sustainable Skincare:
- Ethical Sourcing: Sustainable skincare starts with responsibly sourced ingredients. This involves supporting fair trade practices, promoting biodiversity, and ensuring that the cultivation methods don't harm ecosystems.
Specifically: Our bars do not contain palm oil, and we use organic ingredients where possible. We also use a diverse range of ingredients, spreading the impact of our products across a wider range of habitats.
- Environmentally Conscious Production: The manufacturing process of sustainable skincare products prioritises energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction. This commitment to eco-friendly production practices minimises the carbon footprint of each product.
Specifically: We use plant based ingredients and buy our ingredients in bulk, we are powered by 50% green sources, and we focus on multi-use skincare products that are appealing all year round. This reduces what consumers need to purchase and reduces our waste. Our condensed bar format also means that water, which is a main ingredients in most lotions and gels, does not need to be used and transported through the supply chain.
- Thoughtful Packaging Choices: Unlike traditional skincare products that often come in single-use plastic packaging, sustainable skincare opts for alternatives that are biodegradable, compostable, or reusable. A
Specifically: At Clementine Suds, we've taken this a step further by offering our products in bar format, eliminating the need for plastic entirely. Some of our products are distributed naked, free of any packaging.
- Transparent and Responsible Branding: Sustainable skincare brands prioritize transparency in sharing information about their sourcing, production, and overall impact.
Specifically: We hope the transparency we offer through our labelling and website builds trust with our consumers and empowers them to make informed choices aligned with their values. Follow our socials to see more of this. If you cant see the information that you need - just ask!
